ANNIES CAFE AND BAR
As I get older I have come to appreciate a great event that occurs every weekend. This great event I am referring to is brunch. I am a firm believer that Sundays were made for brunch. Brunch is a beautiful thing that combines the best of breakfast and lunch, which is a beautiful harmonization for foodies like myself. I have been trying really hard to try new places and broaden my restaurant horizons and this morning it definitely paid off.
This morning I discovered a fabulous brunch place in the heart of Austin, TX called Annies Cafe and Bar. This adorable place is a local’s dream come true. It is on South Congress street in the middle of downtown. It’s a charming cafe that reminds me of the cafes I frequented during my recent trip to London and Paris. If you are looking to escape the craziness that the past week was or that the upcoming week has on the horizon I highly recommend this place.
Annies is all about the “brunch experience”. They don’t rush to take your order or rush out your food. It isn’t a lack of attention they just want to make sure you take a moment to relax and enjoy your company and environment and I appreciated that. Overall, it is a wonderful place to unwind and if you go alone a great place to enjoy a good book (if you sit outside). My family and I sat outside since it was not an overly hot morning, which is quite unusual this time of year in Austin, TX. Inside was quite loud and energetic so in my opinion sit outside if you are looking to have a peaceful morning.
Now, let’s get to the important things. The FOOD and drinks. Like any acceptable brunch place mimosas are a favorite. I did not have one, but they looked wonderful. I instead had their organic coffee that I ended up drinking an entire pot of. It was splendid. I have not had coffee that amazing since my trip to Europe. The flavor was truly wonderful and thankfully my attentive waitress refilled my cup with the glorious drink often. Next time I go back I will be trying their lattes and cappuccinos since their basic coffee was so great.
The menu is a very different and European influenced menu. My parents and I all ordered different things so we could try multiple things on the menu. We will start with my mom’s order the Fried Egg Sandwich and Potatoes. This hearty sandwich was full of flavor with perfectly cooked fried eggs, tomatoes, and bacon served on a fantastic sourdough bread. It came with a side of the most perfectly seasoned potatoes I have ever eaten. It was an excellent portion of food as well, not too much.
Next, my dad ordered the Buttermilk Griddle Cakes. I did not get a chance to try these, but according to my parents they were the best pancakes they have ever eaten. They did look pretty spectacular and perfectly cooked.
I ordered the Brioche French Toast. It was perfection. It wasn’t overly sweet and was topped lightly with powdered sugar and very fresh strawberries and blueberries that they got locally. Normally, the french toast is served with sausage, but I am more of a bacon fan so I switched them out and it was a great choice. Their bacon is organic and had incredible flavor. Also, if you are a British enthusiast like myself, Annies offers an authentic Full English Breakfast that is everything you would get from a local cafe in the city of London. I will be returning soon to try this and get a taste of the country I love so dearly.
I am definitely looking forward to returning to this precious cafe for brunch, but their lunch and dinner menus also looked magnificent. Annie’s cafe also has fresh baked bread, pastries, and coffee you can take on the go. Pricing I felt was pretty normal for brunch. Not on the extreme expensive side and you absolutely get what you pay for. Even their lunch and dinner menus are priced extremely well for organic and local ingredients and flavors that you will be dreaming about for weeks and weeks.
This place is a gem and I plan to become a frequent customer. I highly recommend it especially if you are visiting the eclectic city of Austin and are looking to enjoy the things the city has to offer. I hope you enjoy this European influenced cafe and be on the lookout for new posts from me on great restaurants to try!
