Isn’t football season wonderful? Sitting in ridiculous heat to watch guys hit each other, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
This past Saturday my Longhorns took on the UTEP miners (it is the miners right?) also known as University of Texas El Paso. I compared this game to 17 year old Nichole getting into a fight with 24 year old Nichole. It’s not really a fair fight. 24 year old Nichole loses that one if you were wondering.
Even though I felt pretty confident Texas had this game won before they even got to the stadium, there was still some doubt that Texas would fully come off the high of beating Notre Dame in 20T. I mean I haven’t even recovered. My voice never came back and I am still low key celebrating…rewatching the game for the 100th time.
Regardless, it was time for another game and the last game at DKR for over a month (thank you Big12 scheduling…) and I was ready.
For the first time in 3 years, Texas was going to win on my birthday weekend. After a wonderful celebration with some of my dearest friends I shifted my mind to gameday.
One of my best friends was going to attend her very first Texas game at DKR. She went to Baylor so I was glad I got to take her to a real stadium :))))))))))
After showing her around campus and attending the Texas Exes tailgate it was time to enter the glorious stadium and hike way up to our very very very high seats… I have an extreme fear of heights and have never had to sit up in the upper deck at a UT game. Ever.
I took my final breaths of oxygen and climbed Mount Everest to get to my seats. Holy heights. I mean MAN who knew this stadium was THAT tall.
The stadium was significantly quieter and emptier compared to the week before. The energy was lacking and the people who are up this high literally do not stand at all. One even took it upon himself to scoot himself so far back my friend had to put her legs across the spare seats to her left. EXCUSE ME SIR PERSONAL BUBBLE.
Back to the game.
It was a rough first quarter. Defense was in shambles. Offensively we didn’t look dominate. And I’m having a panic attack which I couldn’t figure out because of the height issue or the whole Texas is barely beating the lesser version of themselves issue.
Thankfully my saving grace texted me “room by us in endzone come sit” BLESS. YES. ADIOS LACK OF OXYGEN. We grabbed our oxygen masks and made the hike back down the mountain and made it to our seats just in time for the third quarter.
Kick off. We needed to get it together for the second half and start scoring touchdowns like Alabama against a 3A high school team.
I was into this game now. Defense was making better tackles, stopping the run, and Brandon Jones blocked a punt. When do we get to see this kid at safety? (Question courtesy of every Longhorn).
Honestly the second half was quite the blur. Poona Ford received a bogus penalty for unsportsman like conduct for taking a bow after a massive hit…one of many poor calls that evening. There was even a moment when Jerrod Heard went in as QB…not sure why when he scored two touchdowns as a receiver but ok Sterlin. You do you. Oh and Happy belated birthday to our new stud receiver. I have a lot of respect for Heard for switching positions and making a major impact on this team. True Texas hero.
I need to spotlight Hagar and Dickson. These two had MAJOR games. Dickson is averaging 52 yards per punt and some people just don’t realize what a major factor that is playing in the longhorn’s current success. Breckyn Hager is a STUD. This kid is fun to watch because he loves to hit and plays with extreme passion. He will be a game changer even more so this season, mark my words.
The final score did not accurately reflect the entire game to me, but it’s hard to go from up tempo Notre Dame to UTEP.
Regardless Texas is 2-0 for the first time in awhile.I’m feeling good on my 2nd week on the journey to the cliff because life is better when you’re a winner am I right?
Final score: 41-7 W
Now the journey takes us to Cal. The game from last year that started my journey to the cliff. One kick. One nightmare that is still haunting me (I’M STILL NOT OVER IT NICK ROSE). We head to Cal with a score to settle and a battle to finish. This is the game where we see just how real this Texas team is. Can the freshman handle a powerful offense that legit threw the ball 70 TIMES IN ONE GAME. Can our freshman God sent QB continue his climb up the Longhorn Legend Ladder? (totally branding that right there)
You can find all these answers back next week with Nichole & The Cliff. I’ll be posted up at 9:30pm for kick off, decked out in burnt orange, with a taco in hand, thanking the Good Lord above that I am not from California.
Until then Longhorns bask in your glory and just remember ou, tech, tcu, and ok state have already lost 1 and feel free to remind them like they did us 🙂
Hook’Em,
Nichole
